Mridangam – The Instrument
One of the oldest Indian Percussion Instrument
The mridangam is the classical double-sided drum of South India and is used as an accompaniment for vocal, instrumental and dance performances. It is one of the oldest percussion instruments from India, with references of the instrument found in poetry from the Sangam literature era (spanning between 300 BCE to 300 CE). The instrument is played with both the hands with complex fingering patterns on the dominant and supporting hands.
Mridangam & Kanjira – ClassesBeginner level (2 years) classes start with basic fingering technique’s introduction for Mridangam and Kanjira. In parallel, students are introduced to Verbal recital (Konnakkol) techniques for a strong foundation. Further, classes continue through lessons in the 4 popular taalas of Adi, Roopakam, Misra Chapu and Khanda Chapu.
Intermediate level (2 – 3 years) students continue to learn complex patterns across the popular taalas. They also learn recital pieces such as mohra, kuraippu, and korvais. Students are introduced to the complex arithmetic world of 7 taalams, taala angas, different jathis and such. As part of learning, students will also sit through guided listening sessions of Carnatic music.
Students may have opportunities to perform and take optional competitive exams
Advance training (4 – 5 years)As a student enters the advanced level, they would have a basic proficiency to accompany simple carnatic songs and bhajans. Through the initial years in the advanced level, students will learn more complex patterns across 35 – 103 taalas, and also learn significant varnams, tillanas, songs with chittaswaram etc., After that, advance training is all about going deep in skills. More listening sessions, accompanying guru in concerts (as applicable), sessions with visiting masters from India and so on. Eligible students will be encouraged to do a formal arangetram to demonstrate their arrival at a professional level.
