Aarti Shankar is a distinguished Carnatic violinist and a devoted disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Lalgudi GJR Krishnan. She had the rare privilege of learning under the legendary violinist Padma Bhushan Lalgudi G Jayaraman for a brief yet formative period. Her musical journey began with initial training in vocal music from her mother, Malini Shankar who recently won the lifetime achievement award in music by Telugu Talli Canada.
Known for the melodic sweetness and classical lyricism of her music, Aarti has established herself as a sought-after soloist and accompanist, performing extensively across India and North America. She has accompanied both eminent maestros and promising vocalists of the present generation and is a regular performer at the prestigious Chennai Margazhi Music Festival.
A recipient of multiple accolades, Aarti has been honored twice with Endowment Awards from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai. She was also awarded a twelve-month Arts Fellowship from the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, during which she pursued advanced training in both vocal and violin music. Beyond performance, Aarti is an accomplished composer, regularly creating music for dance and collaborating with artists across diverse genres in North America.
With over 15 years of teaching experience, Aarti is passionate about nurturing the next generation of musicians. She has served as a violin instructor and continues to mentor private students. She finds immense joy in imparting this rich art form to dedicated learners, guiding them to deepen their practice through introspection and perseverance.
In addition to her musical achievements, Aarti holds an MSc in Neuroscience from the University of Calgary, where her research focused on using music to improve walking in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
